Information on Prof. Rachel Batterham
Professor Rachel L. Batterham OBE is Professor of Obesity, Diabetes and Endocrinology at UCL and a consultant at UCLH, and established the UCLH Bariatric Centre for Weight Management and Metabolic Surgery.
Research focus: Gut-brain hormone biology of appetite and weight regulation, including PYY and GLP-1, bariatric-surgery mechanisms and precision management of obesity.
Translational impact: Leadership in clinical trials of GLP-1-based therapies such as semaglutide showing clinically meaningful weight loss and metabolic benefit, with broad implications for chronic obesity care.
Leadership & honours: NIHR Research Professor (2016) and appointed OBE in 2022 for services to people affected by obesity, with national roles across UCL/UCLH research programmes.
Clinical interests: Multidisciplinary weight-management pathways, complication reduction after bariatric surgery and addressing health inequalities in obesity.
