Professor Rupert Mark Pearse OBE is NIHR Professor of Intensive Care Medicine at Queen Mary University of London and a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine on the Adult Critical Care Unit at The Royal London Hospital, Barts Health.

Current roles: Founding director-level leader within the Critical Care and Peri-operative Medicine Research Group, developing large, multicentre clinical trials that improve outcomes after major surgery.

Education & training: Graduated in Medicine from St George's, University of London (1996) followed by specialist training in anaesthesia and intensive care across the south-west Thames region.

Research focus & trials: Peri-operative risk and haemodynamic optimisation, leading landmark programmes including OPTIMISE, OPTIMISE II and EPOCH, with pragmatic trial methods embedded in routine NHS care.

Leadership & honours: Appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2024 New Year Honours for services to intensive care medicine; former Clinical Director of Research for Barts Health and QMUL partnerships.

Teaching & mentorship: Supervises clinical-academic fellows and delivers national and international education on peri-operative medicine, data-driven pathways and outcome audit.
