Information on Prof. Sarah Muirhead‑Allwood
Miss Sarah Muirhead-Allwood FRCS is an internationally recognised Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and pioneer of complex primary and revision hip replacement, and the founder of The London Hip Unit in 2002.
Education & training: Read medicine at St Thomas' Hospital Medical School and undertook surgical and orthopaedic training at St Thomas', University College Hospital, the Westminster Hospital and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital.
Clinical interests: Complex primary and revision total hip arthroplasty, hip resurfacing and tissue-sparing anterior approaches, periprosthetic infection and instability, and management of challenging bone loss and deformity.
Research, teaching & leadership: Founder member of the British Hip Society and member of European and International Hip Societies, author on wear, corrosion and revision techniques, and senior faculty for hip reconstruction courses.
Service & systems: Runs MDT-embedded, imaging-led pathways for difficult hip cases with robust pre-operative planning and structured post-operative surveillance in a high-volume specialist unit.
Selected publications & contributions: Peer-reviewed work on two-stage uncemented revision for infection and on modular taper wear, with public education on modern hip replacement and resurfacing.
