Professor and consultant transplant and general surgeon; lead in kidney transplantation services.

Professor Vassilios Papalois is Professor of Transplantation Surgery at Imperial College London and a Consultant Transplant and General Surgeon at Hammersmith Hospital within Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

Education & training: Trained across leading European and US transplant centres before appointment in London, consolidating expertise in kidney and pancreas transplantation and peri-operative optimisation.

Clinical interests: High-risk live-donor kidney transplantation, extended-criteria deceased-donor kidney and pancreas transplantation, and the clinical application of hypothermic and normothermic machine organ perfusion to improve graft outcomes.

Research, teaching & leadership: Leads a transplant centre of excellence with active programmes in organ perfusion science, graft viability assessment and ethics/health-policy in transplantation, with >170 peer-reviewed papers, book chapters and textbooks and senior roles in European transplantation bodies.

Service & systems: Developed one of Europe’s largest live-donor kidney programmes and embedded MDT pathways linking nephrology, anaesthesia, imaging and immunology with registry-based outcomes and patient-reported measures.

Selected publications & contributions: Outputs in machine perfusion, extended-criteria transplantation and service design, with invited keynotes and guideline influence across European transplant networks.
