Prof. Shanta Persaud

Professor Shanta J. Persaud is Professor of Diabetes and Endocrine Pharmacology at King’s College London, recognised for seminal work on signalling pathways that regulate insulin secretion and β-cell mass.

Education & training: First-class BSc in Physiology & Pharmacology followed by a PhD on regulation of insulin secretion from islets of Langerhans, leading to an academic career at King’s.

Research focus: Human islet biology, stimulus–secretion coupling, β-cell survival and regeneration and translation of stem-cell-derived β-cells towards cell-replacement therapies for diabetes.

Leadership & funding: Principal investigator on nationally funded programmes in diabetes research with sustained supervision of PhD and clinical fellows and active roles in research consortia.
