Mr Murali Somasundaram MBBS FRCS DPhil (Oxon) is a Consultant General Surgeon at the Royal Free London with a specialist interest in hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgery, appointed as a substantive consultant at Barnet Hospital in July 2023 and Service Line Lead for General Surgery at Barnet and Chase Farm Hospitals in September 2024.

Education & training: DPhil in Surgical Sciences from the University of Oxford with London School of Surgery training and senior clinical fellowship experience in HPB and liver transplantation at the Royal Free London.

Clinical interests: Elective and emergency general surgery including hernia and gallbladder disease with selected complex benign HPB surgery, integrated with endoscopy and cross-specialty collaboration.

Research, teaching & leadership: Contributor to Royal Free HPB service research outputs and collaborative publications, with ongoing roles in pathway development and team leadership across the Barnet and Chase Farm network.

Service & systems: Designs one-stop clinics and ERAS-aligned peri-operative pathways with MDT decision-making and structured follow-up and surveillance where indicated.

Selected publications & contributions: Co-author and collaborator in HPB service publications and service-evaluation work, with education for trainees and referrers.
